MandyMooreBlog.com applauds Mandy Moore, who was a guest of honor at the 2009 World Savers Congress in New York, recently. As a World Saver herself, Mandy teamed with Population Services International (PSI) and the Global Fund to launch an exciting initiative bringing 3 million new mosquito nets to aid in Sudan's ongoing fight against malaria.
Joining forces with Five & Alive, PSI's child survival program, Mandy travelled to Southern Sudan to witness first-hand, the effects of malaria's devastating grip on the country. In a region where hospital beds are filled to near-capacity, mosquito nets are a critical component in the fight against one of the chief causes of malaria.
Ultimately, mosquito nets are just the beginning. For Mandy, and those like her at the annual Congress, malaria's effect on valuable water sources is a major source of concern. Among the country's 42 million residents, methods of water purification are still an all-to-neglected subject.
In a recent article on HuffingtonPost.com, Mandy refers to a meeting with a Sudanian woman named Antoinette. Determined to improve the lives of her family, friends, and neighbors, Antoinette teaches proper water-purification methods to stem the spread of malaria. Mandy says:
"She calls herself a peer educator and that's what I call myself too. In a way,
I'm joining her army, supporting her in the challenges she faces. The
problems that she and so many like her are facing are incredibly complex.
But my experience in Sudan has convinced me that solutions do exist,
and the people most in need are eager to be a part of them."
While Mandy is certainly deserving of accolades for her singing, songwriting, and acting abilities, her generosity and good-will make her an exceptional human being.
