To literary fans, Sarah Dessen is a popular writer known for such books as "That Summer," "Someone Like You
," and "Just Listen
." Fans of Mandy Moore, meanwhile, may recognize Dessen as the author behind Mandy's 2003 hit film, "How to Deal
."
Yet few realize the true connection both women share. As a 19 year old actress, Mandy was riding a wave of popularity off her 2002 classic, A Walk to Remember. Dessen, meanwhile, was still a promising young writer, whose star-studded hopes rested on the film-adaptation of her first two books.
"[Neena Beber], who wrote the screenplay, was also a writer for the MTV show, "Daria," recalls Dessen. "Though it was optioned and had a script, nothing really happened with the movie until Mandy Moore read it."
After searching for the right follow-up to A Walk to Remember, Mandy's decision was clear. In that moment, she became the young Hailey Martin. "Mandy loved the script and wanted to star in it, and thus history was made."
Co-starring Allison Janney, the film went to gross more than $14 million, including $5.8 million in its opening weekend.
For Dessen, the experience was the opportunity of a lifetime. In addition to meeting Mandy Moore, Dessen earned her very own picture with singer/actress. "Everyone in my house LOVES Mandy Moore," confesses the writer.
