Few can forget Ralph Lauren's recent gaffe that involved the careless (and somewhat disturbing) photo-editing of one of their models in a recent ad campaign. Taken to task for shaving a disproportionate amount from Filippa Hamilton's waist, the company apologized-- then quickly fired their size 4 model for being "too fat."
In a culture filled with skinny socialites and emaciated supermodels, Jordan Christy's latest book, entitled "How to Be a Hepburn in a Hilton World: The Art of Living with Style, Class, and Grace" is a tasteful breath of fresh air. Rejecting society's assortment of cookie-cutter Britneys, Jessicas, Kims, and Christinas, Christy issues a call for real substantive change.
"We live in a free country with rights, freedoms, and opportunities that women would have killed for a hundred years ago," Christy writes, "and instead of voting, getting the CEO spot, going for doctorate, or volunteering at a women's shelter, many young woman today are too busy shaking their badonkadonks in short-lived music videos and diligently bedazzling their cell phones with more pink rhinestones."
The answer she explains, is a new-kind of "It-Girl," in the model of Reese Witherspoon, America Ferrera, or in particular, Mandy Moore. Women like Mandy, she explains, are "stylish, classy, graceful girls next door who earned their success through hard work. "
Dubbing these women "Hepburns" after the ever-graceful Audrey Hepburn, Christy's "It-Girl" helps people, reads books, dresses modestly, lets the man come calling, and does her bit to make the world a better place.
